Nakura
Nakura is a renowned prison in Eritrea, constructed by the Italian colonial authorities back in 1892 to incarcerate Eritreans who opposed their rule. Positioned on a diminutive island, the Italians believed it was an escape-proof location, surrounded by the peril of sharks in the Red Sea. After the Italians vacated, the prison island served Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia during his reign. Featuring subterranean chambers, the prison is infamous for its severe conditions, while the islands endure scorching temperatures (exceeding 40°C during summer, accompanied by extremely high humidity).
